Competition structure 🎯

The competition consists of the following four test:

1) Written test πŸ“‘

What is the aim of this phase? : This stage is designed to assess your general knowledge of neuroscience through a series of questions.

How much time should I allow?Β  : Approximately 30 minutes.

This section of the test will consist of a total of 30 multiple-choice questions.

It is important to note that some questions may have more than one correct answer. The student must identify all the correct answers.

Please note that points will be deducted for incorrect or partially correct answers, in order to maintain the accuracy and rigor of the assessment.

2) Patients diagnosis πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

In this test, participants take on the role of an experienced doctor.

What is the objective of this stage? : The aim is to make a precise diagnosis of a patient’s pathology.

How long does it take?Β  : Approximately 60 minutes.

During the test, participants are asked to analyze the medical cases of 6 different patients (approx. 10 minutes per patient).

To succeed in this diagnostic task, participants are provided with several elements:

[A] Descriptive video 🎞️ :

We have developed a dedicated video to provide you with a visual overview of the motor symptoms and other relevant visual indicators presented by the patient.

These videos have been carefully designed to capture different aspects of the symptoms, enabling you to better understand the clinical situation. Some videos may be accompanied by sound, adding an extra dimension to the assessment, while others may be deliberately soundless to focus attention on the visual aspects.

This visual resource is designed to help you develop your observation and analysis skills, focusing on the details crucial to achieving an accurate diagnosis.

[B] Case report πŸ“‘:

We have prepared a brief description of the patient, which is presented in the form of a narrative as communicated by the patient himself, either by his family or by the doctors in charge of his case.

This description is intended to be an essential piece of the diagnostic puzzle, providing key information on medical history, symptoms experienced and other relevant elements. By understanding how the patient and those around him perceive the situation, you’ll be better equipped to contextualize symptoms and develop an accurate diagnosis.

We strongly encourage you to take this narrative into account, as it can provide crucial clues for establishing links between symptoms, medical history and the patient’s current situation.

[C] Scratch sheetπŸ“‹ :

Once you’ve viewed the video and reviewed the patient’s case report, you’ll have access to an original examination sheet. This sheet, specially designed for this test, is interactive and will enable you, in the manner of a doctor, to carry out various medical examinations.

These examinations are designed to provide additional clues for a precise diagnosis of the pathology presented. The examination sheet is designed to be scratched, enabling you to simulate medical actions and obtain visual revelations accordingly.

The student has a varied choice of 19 medical tests, each offering a unique opportunity to explore different aspects of the clinical situation. However, it is important to note that the selection of tests to be performed is of crucial importance in maximizing your points. Opting for the tests that are most relevant and best suited to the situation will be the key to success at this stage of the diagnosis. We therefore encourage you to make informed and judicious choices in order to obtain the information you need for a complete and accurate diagnosis.πŸ”¬

3) Neuroanatomy and Neurohistology 🧠

In the section dedicated to neuroanatomy, participants must be fully prepared to identify and name all the structures evoked in the syllabus provided by the Institut du Cerveau de Paris (ICM). This skill goes beyond simple visual recognition, as students will also need to be able to provide a general function associated with each of these structures. To succeed in this part, various visual aids such as photos, brain models and diagrams will be presented.

In the neurohistology section, the same level of requirement is maintained. This time, however, an additional step is introduced. In addition to conventional media such as photographs, participants will be confronted with the identification of an actual brain section, observed through a microscope. This approach offers an authentic, hands-on experience, testing their in-depth knowledge and ability to apply their skills in a real-life context.

These sections require a complete mastery of concepts and skills related to neuroanatomy and neurohistology. They provide an opportunity to demonstrate a thorough understanding of brain structures and their functions, both in theory and in practical application. Careful preparation and familiarity with different presentation methods are therefore essential to shine in these assessment components.

For the top 5 πŸ₯‡πŸ₯ˆ πŸ₯‰

4) Jeopardy or question and answer live ! πŸ‘‹

The five highest-ranked participants from the first three sections will have the opportunity to compete in the final phase, known as “Jeopardy” or “Live Answer”.

In this decisive phase, students will be faced with 15 questions, which will be read out by a moderator and displayed on a large screen.

Students will need to be quick to grab a buzzer that will be provided, allowing them to give their answer first.

Once the buzzer is activated, students will have the opportunity to provide their answer to the question posed, with the possibility of earning bonus points for correct answers.

It’s important to note that each student will have the opportunity to write down his or her answer, thus contributing to the competition by accumulating points.

The questions asked in this final stage will follow the same format as those used in the previous three sections. This phase will test participants’ quick thinking and accuracy, offering an extra dose of excitement to the event.

International Brain Bee – An international neuroscience competition 🌍

The International Brain Bee (IBB) is a prestigious global neuroscience competition designed specifically for high school students.

Each year, this major competition is carefully organized in a different country, offering participants a unique international experience.

At the Institut du Cerveau, we attach particular importance to promoting academic excellence. That’s why we are firmly committed to covering all costs associated with the participation of the winner and their accompanying person.

This includes travel and accommodation expenses for the competition, which will take place in the host country of the International Olympiad. Our aim is to enable the winner to concentrate fully on his or her participation, and to proudly represent our institution on the world stage.

Brain Bee in your school.. 🏫

Most of the winners of previous editions of the Olympiads had initiated the creation of neuroscience clubs within their respective institutions.

This is proving to be a particularly stimulating element for student involvement, as well as providing a solid structure for both students and teachers to collaborate in preparing for the next Olympiads.

For the benefit of our esteemed teachers, we would like to encourage you to energize these neuroscience clubs by presenting a variety of ready-to-implement activities.

These activities are based on educational games, some of which can easily be integrated into the classroom!
